PLASTIC POLLUTION
Plastic pollution has become one of the biggest environmental issues in the modern world.
A large portionof marine life suffers heavily due to the enormous amount of plastic in the ocean, and it continues to be a factor in the decliningpopulation of marine life and corals.
Also, since plastics are not biodegradable and take 200-500 years to degrade, it's not a problem that goes away with time.
There is an estimated 5.25 trillion macro and microplastic in every square mile of the ocean.
Other than the drastic effect plastic pollution has on the ocean, the creation of plastic itself poses another environmental problem. The large amount of greenhouse gases released during the production of plastic contributes heavily to global warming.
With the vast amounts of plastic discarded in the environment, microplastics now contaminate the entire planet, from the summit of Mount Everest to the deepest depth of the ocean.
Recent studies show that people eat 5 grams of micro and nano plastic weekly, equivalent to a weekly credit card.
Over 1 million marine animals are killed every year due to plastic pollution.
What you can do to reduce the issue
- Switch to reusable bags instead of plastic bags
- Look for paper or biodegradable alternatives
- Carry a reusable water bottle instead of buying plastic bottles
- Avoid constantly ordering food in single-use take-out container
- Reuse, reduce and recycle
- Buy in bulk
- Support green initiatives
- Establish proper waste management plans
